Modal analysis of spur gears for varied teeth root cracks characteristics: finite element analysis (FEA) simulations

Gear failure is considered the main alarming and undesirable event in gearboxes. Usually, cracks happen by fatigue caused due to cyclic loading. Fatigue stress focused on teeth root because of small tooth fillet radius. This causes progressive damage gear which failure, hence, a damaged gear. work shows numerical framework identify quantify cracks' existence at spur gears. The problem numerically analysed through finite element-based simulation with ANSYS conducting modal analysis. There are nine cases gears different their tooth; these varied number (single or multiple), Crack Length Percentage (CLP %), location. FEA used simulate all predict bending natural frequency investigate effects variation crack looking as well deformation level. Results revealed that decreases CLP% increases. In addition, stiffness calculated based gear’s mass it indicated increases, while level increase CLP%.
